CHAPTER TEN

Kate’s presence at the additional rehearsal, while perhaps not absolutely necessary, was appreciated, by both her niece and Pali Moon.

Luke asked if he could practice his speech at the beginning of the ceremony. Pali encouraged him to do so.

He moved to the chest-high table that Kate suspected would be the altar during the ceremony. A smattering of white wooden chairs were occupied by the wedding party, Phyllis and Kate. The rest of the large room was empty. Huge sliding doors were open on each side, as they would be for the ceremony, giving the impression that they were outside on a covered lanai. A soft evening breeze wafted through the room periodically.

Luke cleared his throat, then clenched his hands together at his waist.

“Try to keep your hands down to your sides,” Pali said in a gentle voice. She was standing a few feet to his left, near Kate’s chair.

He dropped his hands and immediately wrapped thick fingers tightly around the hem of his aloha shirt.

Pali looked Kate’s way and gave her a half eye roll.

Luke cleared his throat again. “Aloha, everyone, and mahalo from me and Amy for joining us to celebrate the beginning of our life together.” His eyes darted to one side of the room and then back to center again. He made a stiff motion with his hand to his left. “You will notice that we have a slight breeze today, augmented by the ceiling fans.” He raised his arm toward the ceiling as if he were a traffic cop stopping oncoming cars.

Kate stifled a snicker. Maybe this extra rehearsal wasn’t such a bad idea.

“Whenever you feel the brush of air movement, know that the spirits of our missing ’ohana are with us today, those who could not make the trip and those who have passed away.”

Kate’s throat closed at the thought of her late first husband, Amy’s Uncle Ed. As if on cue, a breeze stirred her curls, much the way Eddie had once ruffled them with that teasing glint in his eyes.

Her own eyes stung. “She’s all grown up,” she whispered to Eddie’s spirit.

“We will start the ceremony with an exchange of leis.” Luke’s voice gained strength and confidence as he went on. “These circles of flowers are unbroken, and like the rings, which we will also exchange later in the ceremony, they represent our undying devotion to each other.”

Pali clapped her hands together several times. The group joined in the short round of applause.

Luke grinned and gave a small bow.

Then Pali stepped up next to him and spoke softly. He leaned his head down to her and nodded several times.

“Okay then,” Pali called out, “the mothers will be escorted to their seats just before things get rolling. Then the kahu will come down the aisle with Luke, and the groomsmen will line up at the altar.” She waved the young men out of their seats and they gathered behind Luke. “Bridesmaids and Amy, to the back of the room, please.”

Kate zoned out while Pali walked the young women through the processional.
